WHEELCHAIR RUGBY FEDERATION OF INDIA” being a part of the Paralympics movement undertakes to respect the provisions of the Paralympic Charter, Paralympic movement. Anti-Doping code and abide by the decisions of the International Paralympic Federation.

This Federation facilitate Wheelchair Rugby sports across India for physically handicapped Athletes.  We aims to participate at the National Level in accordance with the Paralympic Charter.

As Wheelchair Rugby sport is the only coed team game for Quadriplegic athletes, we seeks to promote peace and the involvement of women in sports too.

Objective of Wheelchair Rugby Federation of India is to promote, provide, and encourage the physical, mental, moral, and cultural education along with wheelchair rugby skills, independent skills on wheelchair across all the states in India. The goal is to develop wheelchair rugby in India and make national team to represent at international tournaments.


History and Recognition of Wheelchair Rugby:

Invented in 1977 in Winnipeg, Canada, Wheelchair Rugby gained global recognition when the International Wheelchair Rugby Federation (IWRF) was established in 1993. One year later, it became an official Paralympic sport, and now more than forty countries actively participate or have developed programs within their nations.


The Journey in India:

Wheelchair Rugby arrived in India in 2009 during the IWAS Tournament in Bangalore, where the Indian team faced Team Brazil. Since then, it has become a beacon of hope for wheelchair users, promoting an active and independent lifestyle. The sport has provided physical and mental improvements, turning quadriplegic wheelchair users into fierce athletes on the court. WRFI has conducted 5 National Para Championship, 2 State level tournaments along with conducting various training camps in different states of India. Team India has participated in 4 International Tournaments till date and have few more International championship lined-up for next year. We currently have Wheelchair Rugby teams in 18 states with 220 para athletes registered with us.


Our Aim:

At Wheelchair Rugby Federation of India (WRFI), we are sole governing body for promoting and developing Wheelchair Rugby sports in India. We conduct training camps to foster physical rehabilitation, social inclusion, empowerment, and increased accessibility along with training physically handicapped athletes to Wheelchair Rugby sports and guiding them to live independent life on wheelchair. We organize National para championship and state level tournaments to evaluate and groom Wheelchair Rugby Athletes. We run selection trials and player hunt to select incredible talents for our National team and provide them platform to participate and perform their best at International level.
